Rogue Legacy: Heirs have their uses!

Rogue legacy as the title of the game suggests, is a 'Roguelike' game. This game genre is defined by random level generation, permanent death and generally (but not always) 2-D style tile based environments. If done poorly, this will lead to frustrating and short lived play, due to the perma-death feature. However if done well, a roguelike game will offer hours of fun and a unique sense of progression, albeit with some frustration still.

Considering I have no sunk 80+ hours into Rogue Legacy, it safely falls into the 'good' category for myself. It's unique approch to the perma-death of a character is that you can choose 1 of 3 heirs for the death of your previous character. You earn gold throughout your characters life which can be spent on upgrades which in turn are then passed onto your heirs, these range from base health increases, to access to new weapons and even new classes with unique abilities. As you spent your gold your castle will grow adding more towers with further choices on what to spend your gold on giving you a physical representation of your progression!

When you choose to be succeeded by one of your 3 hiers it's interesting to note that not all heirs are created equal! Not only is each heir assigned a class with their own unique play style but there are smaller traits which can be beneficial or a complete handicap to them (not to mention hilarious). These range from dwarfism making your character tiny, shortsightedness meaning enemies at range appear blurry. A personal favorite is being clumsy meaning any destructible object you touch will explode! so rather than landing on a table over a spike pit safely, if your character is clumsy he will crash straight through it onto the spikes!

Each time you enter the dungeon it will be randomly generated but will have the same rough lay out with the tougher areas being joined to the starting area, I won't go into to much detail as to how as part of the joy of this game is exploring and getting your head around the mechanics. There are some really tough boss fights to which can be incredibly tough to get past considering even reaching them can be exceptionally challenging! Luckily very early on you will get the ability to 'lock' the dungeon down preventing it from randomly spawning again and enabling you to jump straight to the door outside a boss fight.

This game is an incredible amount of fun and considering how often you die very fast paced! if your looking to dip your toe into the roguelegacy genre this is a great place to start! check out Durr's failed attempts in the video below.

Surgeon Simulator 2013: A true test in patience

Surgeon Simulator 2013 is about as far away from an actual simulator as you can get. The title of the game itself is completely tongue in cheek. The controls are probably some of the worst and most difficult I have ever encountered. I kind of get that this is meant to be the point but it's truly horrendous, as I shall elaborate on later.

You play the game as a 'surgeon', although all you will ever see is a floating hand. The first surgery you are presented with is a heart transplant. Your job is to smash open their rib cage remove the organs, replace the heart then place the organs back into the patient. Sounds straight forward enough right? A bit of open heart surgery should be fine! Well on my first attempt at this I was even struggling to pick up the tools, let alone perform an operation!

So this is the meat of the game and something that I think you will either love or hate with this game - the controls. You have five buttons to bind each controls, one of the fingers and the thumb. When pressing these buttons down, you close the assigned finger and/or thumb. So your left hand becomes a claw, trying to close all the floating hands fingers and thumbs at once! Now the icing on the cake is that the mouse controls are even worse. You can move the mouse forward and back to move the hand back and forward, hold the left mouse button to move the hand down towards the patient/table/tools, and hold the right mouse button to rotate the wrist. If this all sounds complicated already, try picking up a tool and going to town on your patient.

I get that the controls are meant to be beyond clunky, everything is not meant to work and it's just abit of fun. But MY WIG after trying for 30 minutes just to pick up a hammer to crack open the guys rib cage I really had enough. If you have the patience for this game I could see it being a lot of fun, but for me personally it's rare for me not to have a good thing to say about a game.

Oh wait! I did laugh when my hand bumped into the anesthetic needle and the screen went into a twisted psychedelic rainbow mode. There we go something good to say about the game -  it made me laugh this one time.

London MCM Comic Con

Britain's biggest festival of popular culture, MCM London Comic Con showcases the finest in films, videogames, comics, sci-fi and anime.

This was both Hurr and Durr's first ever Comic Con and whilst the queues were long, the venue was jam packed, and a bit too often there was a unpleasant smell in the air, we both had an amazing time.

Once we got through the queue and inside the main expo, there was a lot to see (if you can manage to navigate through the sea of people).

Here are some of the stalls we saw:

Note the awesome Buster Sword - Hurr is totally going to buy that next time !

But what really made the day for us were the simply stunning cosplayers we saw. There were actually more people in cosplay than not !

Here are some pictures we took of them.

Wakka - Final Fantasy X
This Wakka cosplay was Hurr's cosplay of the day, so much attention to detail and the guy has pretty much the same face as him !

Group Photo:
Leonardo - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Lucy Heartfilia - Fairy Tail
Light Yagami - Death Note
Jacket - Hotline Miami

The Hotline Miami cosplay was Durr's cosplay of the day, being the massive Hotline Miamai fan that he is !

We're not entirely sure what anime this group was from, but they did look amazing!
The sword on the right must have been the biggest we saw all day.

Psychomantis - Metal Gear Solid
This guy was a lot of fun, he even played along with us to take the famous 'puppet' shot.

Vanille - Final Fantasy XIII
The guy on the left looks incredible, unfortunately we're not sure where he is from.

Koanashi - Spirited Away

Jack Sparrow - Pirates of the Caribbean
Dude with chainsaw for a hand?

Ryuk - Deathnote

 Hellboy (girl?)

Group Photo:
Batman - Batman
Scare Crow - Batman
Cat Girl - ????
Guy on the left - ????

Hunter - Left 4 Dead
We met this cosplayer on the tube and I have to say, no one was happier to have their picture taken than he was ! As a first cosplay we thought it was great, keep it up dude !

Mental Mexican man - Mexico?
(On the other side of the sign he had YOMO - You're Only Mexican Once)

Iron Man

Yuna - Final Fantasy X
Rinoa - Final Fantasy VIII
(Moogle belongs to Hurr)

Borderlands 2 Group

Catherine

Witch - Left 4 Dead

Tifa - Final Fantasy VII

Cloud - Final Fantasy VII

Venom - Spider Man
The most detailed painted cosplay we saw there, no idea how she got her face that shape but it looked scary and awesome !

After being around so many cosplayers, Hurr & Durr have decided to go back to MCM in October and cosplay for the first time ever ! It's going to take a lot of hard work and dedication but we think we can pull it off. So watch this space !

Durr Plays XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Well I had disappeared for a few weeks mainly due to having an operation and dealing with the shittyness that is Christmas and avoiding people like the plague!

But one of the main culprits was XCOM a single player game. A single player game hasn't gripped me and sucked me in like XCOM in a long time. In the video below I am trying to begin a 'Classic Ironman' campaign. In this mode the difficulty is severely stepped up and there is no save and go back when things go bad. When your favorite solider dies HE STAYS DEAD.

Seems I had some free DLC turned on which explains some of the randomness with damage I was doing! lesson learnt.
